Build Your Own Computer Camp | The Heights School

Build Your Own Computer

Join us as we learn about the nitty gritty of the hardware and software of computers. Gather with your fellow nerds and grow your computer science and engineering skills. The camp will be two weeks long. One week of hardware and one week of software.

The first week will be devoted to Hardware. We will begin by learning about the individual components that make up a computer, what the numbers mean, and which numbers are really worth paying attention to. Then students who have opted to buy and build a PC to take home will begin assembling their computers under instructor guidance. Students who wish to do their own purchasing outside the camp are free to do so, but the compatibility of their PC build components cannot be guaranteed.

The second week will involve installing operating systems, antivirus software, compression software, disk imaging software, etc. Students who opt to build their own PC will be provided the free version of Windows on a flash drive. Students who wish to purchase a Windows home or pro license can do so for an additional fee. We will discuss how to recognize files that are likely to be malware and the characteristics of websites that distribute them.

The goal is for students to understand computers better so that they will be able to make informed purchases in the future and be able to solve their own computer issues with the help of online resources. Students who purchase and build their own computer will also have a machine they can rely on for many years to come.
